Description:
An excellent condition and very interesting commercial Smith & Wesson Model 1917 revolver.

This S&W is a US Model 1917 revolver in .45acp caliber with 5 1/2" barrel, and is a relatively early example of the model. This revolver was either repurposed during production or returned to the factory by its owner for commercial alteration including a nickel plated finish and the mounting of commercial checkered walnut grips of the period.

This Smith & Wesson bears a S&W commercial serial number on the butt instead of the usual US Army marks. On careful examination the US Government property mark on the bottom of the barrel was removed when the revolver was commercialized. Matching serial numbers are found where expected - on the butt, bottom of barrel, rear of cylinder, and back edge of the crane. A capital 'S' is also found on the bottom of the barrel near the serial and on the rear of the cylinder. All US markings have been removed save the, 'GHS' inspectors mark on the left side of the frame above the recoil shield which is quite clear. All S&W markings and serial numbers on the revolver are clear and sharp. All frame contours and edges are sharp. All details, such as butt serial number, and quality of nickel plating indicate this revolver has been Smith & Wesson factory modified.

Please view all detail and overall pictures of this S&W.

It is interesting to note this S&W revolver does not bear the usual 'star' and date marking found on revolvers returned to the factory for repair/alteration. I have done internet research on S&W 1917 commercial alterations and find that nobody seems to know when S&W began 'star' marking guns returned to the factory for work. A number of collectors/researchers believe S&W revolvers with variant features and finishes but without the 'star' mark are revolvers which received special attention during initial production rather than being returned to the factory at later dates.

CONDITION: This revolver retains 95% nickel plated finish with attractive patina and some light wear on the front of the cylinder, cyl. drag line, and muzzle. The bore is very fine with clean sharp rifling and some very light frosting. Mechanical functions are excellent, the hammer and trigger retain their original casehardened finish. The original S&W commercial checkered walnut grips with deep dish medallions are excellent with original finish and some light handling marks.

A handsome and most interesting high condition Smith & Wesson revolver that makes one think of the 'Indiana Jones' sagas and is most worthy of further research.

NOTE: This revolver is being sold as a collector's item and should not be fired without being fully checked by a professional gunsmith. This revolver must be shipped to an FFL, or C&R license holder. It cannot be shipped to any locations that do not recognize C&R licenses such as NYC, NJ, etc. Buyers are fully responsible for abiding by their local firearms regulations.
