VERY FINE CONDITION CLASSIC EARLY MODEL 1879 TRAPDOOR SPRINGFIELD .45-70 RIFLE WITH CRISP AND CLEAR 1881 STOCK CARTOUCHE. Serial numbered in the 172XXX range, this rifle still retains the original 1879 rear sight with the original “slotless” screws and early style cleaning rod. The 1873 dated breech block and lock plate are correctly stamped. Receiver has an attractive deep aged patina and the barrel blue is all there with some surface freckling that is on top of the blue and has never been cleaned! Fine blue on barrel bands etc. This is really a rifle that was put in storage and left for a lot years- when I got it I couldn’t see any rifling in the bore until I ran an oil patch through it to knock out decades worth of dust to reveal a bright excellent bore. I noticed the tip of the cleaning rod which is indented was full of dust- which I left. There is nice deep blue on the trigger guard and some case color on the upper tang. Exc. stock showing only light handling with a sharp circle P cartouche and dated stock cartouche. I still believe these beautifully crafted Springfield products in the great .45-70 caliber are the biggest bargains on the antique firearms collector market today. Beautifully made and full of history. And all for $995.
