Description:
This is an elegant British boxlock double rifle in the 375 2 1/2" NE caliber. It is in pristine condition, having been refurbished at some time in the past. The rifle was built in 1909, just before Bentley Playfair became part of the Issac Hollis company. The rifle weighs about 10 lbs, with 26" barrels and a LOP just a tad shy of 14". A red Silvers or Old English pad would bring it out to near 15" if needed.
The 375 Express is a rimmed tapered wall cartridge that shoots a 270gr bullet at about 2,000 fps; plenty strong enough for Deer, Hogs, Elk, Moose, Bear, and Plains Game. It would make a classic complement to your 470 or 500 NE double. Kynoch still makes ammunition for this caliber, but I may be able to supply ammunition and dies at a greatly reduced cost.
With the rifle, I received a letter from a US military officer who states that this rifle was presented to him in the 1960s by the infamous General Loan of the Vietnamese police for his help in assisting them in the Tet Offensive. General Loan was made famous for the photo of him executing a Viet Cong prisioner at point blank range that made the rounds during the Vietnam era. It would also make sense that this rifle would be in Asia, as the 375 Express was a popluar caliber for hunting Tigers by the Indian royalty and British officers during the colonial Raj period.
Here's a a classic British double rifle with a bit of history at a very reasonable price that is not limited to large African game, but can be used in many continental hunting opportunities.
