Description: When released in 1955, the Smith & Wesson Model 39 was the first American-made double-action pistol in the 9mm Luger caliber. At that time, the 9mm had a moderate following in the states, the .45 ACP being far more popular due to its greater stopping power. Most Americans’ experience with the 9mm came from the Browning Hi-Power, Walther P38 and DWM Luger pistols, both bring backs from World War II (as well as WWI in the case of the latter). The Model 39 helped to make the 9mm a bit more popular in the US, as well as to popularize double action pistols in general. The S&W 9mm Automatic Pistol was originally developed for U.S. Army pistol trials in the early 1950s. No new pistol was chosen of course but the Model 39 was sold on the commercial market. In 1971, the 39-2 was introduced (there was no official 39-1). This variation introduced a shorter extractor to replace the original which was long and tended to break. Other changes include the barrel guide rod hole and feed ramp. The last 39-2 was shipped in February of 1983. The one shown here left the factory between 1976-77. It retains 95-98% of its original bluing. There is a slight bit of holster wear on the front of the slide, the slide lock, and the safety/decocker. The trigger pull is smooth both in DA and SA modes. The bore is very clean. The previous owner has stated that this pistol is ridiculously accurate, which is not surprising given the level of quality and effort S&W put into making their semi-autos back then. This pistol would make a fine addition to any Smith & Wesson collection.
