Description:
This is a Colt Model of 1903 in .32 ACP. It is the Type 3 variation, meaning it has no barrel bushing and lacks (fortunately) the magazine safety of the later Type 4. These were manufactured between 1910 and 1926. According to the Colt database, this pistol was manufactured in 1918. Like the previous Type 2, the barrel is 3.75 inches long, a little shorter than the Type 1’s 4-inch barrel. The original magazine is present. Original magazines of the period feature an interesting two-tone finish. This is a result of the tempering process. After the magazines were blued (via a Carbonia-blue), the magazines were dipped in a cyanide bath at a temperature of several hundred degrees, in order to temper the feed lips. The result was that the bluing at the top was removed where the magazine was dipped into the bath. Hence the two-tone finish. The pistol itself has a well-worn finish, and some minor pitting is present. The gun still functions as it should, having tested the firing pin and spring with snap caps. The barrel has minor pitting, but it won’t affect the 1903’s accuracy a great deal. The magazine still has good spring tension as does the magazine release spring and recoil spring. These pistols were extremely popular in their day as concealed carry guns, particularly by those in plain clothes. They were widely used on both sides of the law. The 1903 was essentially the Glock 43 of its time.
