FINE EARLY CIVIL WAR AMES U.S. MODEL 1840 MOUNTED ARTILLERY SABER DATED 1845 WITH ORIG. SCABBARD. 39” o/a with 33” blade stamped on the ricasso “N. P. AMES/CABOTVILLE/1845” and on the obverse “US/JH”. Gilded brass hilt and guard with much of the gold remaining. Original grip wrap and wire in excellent condition. Blade in excellent condition with much of the original polish. Excellent scabbard with the original patina and dent free. Rare early date and probably intended for an Officer or high ranking NCO with the gilded hilt.
