ANTIQUE c1840s Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer PEPPERBOX
First American Double Action Revolving Pistol
Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Bar Hammer Pepperbox pistol. Ethan Allen was already a prolific inventor and successful businessman in the 1830s when he came up with this design. This percussion, six shot, double-action pocket pistol was a very popular pistol that was produced in Worcester, Massachusetts. It’s a 32 caliber pepperbox with a revolving screw off fluted barrel and has factory engravings in a floral motif executed on both sides of the frame. Made from 1830-1865, these pistols enjoyed even greater popularity than Sam Colt’s first pistol. The history that these pistols enjoyed over the years is astounding: the Seminole Wars, Gold Rush, Mexican War and American Civil War. These guns are true relics of American history.
The hammer is marked “ALLEN’S PATENT”. The barrel is marked “PATENTED 1837 CAST-STEEL” and “ALLEN&THURBER WORCESTER”.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have traces of the original blue with a dark patina making up the balance. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut grips are in good condition. The bores are smooth & clear. The action on this pepperbox is strong. Here is a very neat piece of firearms history!
