Description:

RARE Martially Inspected REMINGTON-BEALS .44 ARMY

Only 750 Govt Marked of 1,900 Total

Here we present an antique Remington Beals Army Revolver, made circa 1861 in Ilion, New York. Remington made a good hire when Fordyce Beals came over from Eli Whitney’s Whitneyville Armory. Fordyce was responsible for their Army & Navy sized revolvers before the Civil War. When the war began, Remington produced their version of the Beals revolver using his patents. Though not many of these namesake revolvers were made (only about 1,900), they laid the groundwork for a very successful line of martial revolvers that would take the second place spot for number of handguns fielded, just behind Colt’s 1860 Army. The solid frame was superior in durability to the Colt and it continued in use long after the war ended.

This Remington-Beals Army Revolver was one of the few made that received government inspector markings, either do to the size of the contract or perhaps the haste with which these revolvers were being issued to men on the front lines. Both sides of the walnut grips bear a full cartouche with inspector’s initials. The barrel and frame on the left side are both marked “P/C”. Other single letter inspector marks can be observed throughout. The top of the barrel is marked “BEALS PATENT SEPT.14.1858/ MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTON ILION, N.Y.”.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a smooth, gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The walnut grips are in good shape. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling and a thin layer of dust. The action on this revolver is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion
