Antique ALLEN & THURBER Sidehammer TARGET Pistol
Single Shot .45 Caliber Percussion
Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Sidehammer Target Percussion Pistol, made circa the late-1840s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only a few hundred are thought to have been made. This .45 caliber pistol was intended to be used for target shooting but could have easily been thrust into a defensive use if necessary. It is the right size to be carried in a belt. It features a part octagon, part round barrel of 6 inches. The trigger guard includes a convenient rest for the middle finger to get the right grip angle on the pistol. Bore axis is very low in the hand.
The left barrel flat is marked “ALLEN & THURBER/WORCESTER/CAST STEEL”. This is the scarcer marking.
The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The right grip has a crack. The bore is dark with visible rifling. The action on this pistol is nonfunctioning. The hammer moves back and forth without spring tension.
