TACK DECORATED Antique Springfield TRAPDOOR Rifle
Indian Wars Model 1879
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured circa 1880 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The trapdoor was an invention of Erskine S. Allin of Springfield Armory at the end of the Civil War. The first were actually conversions of Civil War Rifle Muskets, but they were later manufactured as new in the trapdoor configuration. These were powerful rifles capable of connecting at long range, but they were single shot in a day when repeaters were becoming the norm. Despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This specimen was shortened at some point from a full-length rifle and features Native American-style brass tack ornamentation. It is marked “U.S./MODEL/1873” on the breech since the armory was using up new-old stock to produce new rifles. This rifle falls into the serial number range of the Model 1879. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces retain a good amount of original finish. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is excellent. Here is a nice US government issue rifle from the era of the Indian Wars!
