MASSIVE Antique WHALING Gun with REMINGTON Barrel
Made for Harpooning Whales Circa the 1850s
Here we present an antique Percussion Whaling Gun, made circa the 1850s. The right side of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON/CAST STEEL”. The barrel is 24 inches in length with a massive .94 caliber smooth bore. This would have been used to shoot short, stout arrow-like projectile called harpoons as a ship came alongside a whale. Attached to the harpoon would be a stout line for tying off to keep the whale captive. Explosive harpoons or bomb lances were also utilized. Whaling was an enormous industry, especially in the New England area. Whale oil was used to provide light and heat before electricity and petroleum oil were in popular use. However, conditions were hard and dangerous to say the least. Imagine how hard these would have been used and how many went overboard or down with a ship!
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are legible. The stock is in good shape with a stable hairline crack emanating from the back of the lock and around the bottom of the barrel tang and a crack on the right from fore cap to barrel wedge. The bore is in great shape. The action is excellent. Here is a scarce and very interesting piece of Remington history!
