Description:
Winchester Model 1873 Sporting Rifle .38-40 with factory 24 inch Octagon Barrel. The serial number of this example is 729XX placing date of manufacture in 1881. The Buffalo Bill Museum "Letter" that will accompany this rifle provides the following description at the time it was shipped. Type: Rifle, Caliber: .38, Barrel Shape: Octagon, Trigger: Plain, Received into the Warehouse on: July 27th, 1881 and Shipped on: August 2nd 1881, Order Number: 26802. This is a "Special Order" 1873 With a very early style "Shotgun Butt". Not mentioned in the Shipping Ledger is common, it was missed. The assembly number for this rifle is 1835 seen on the lower left Tang and the upper Tang Channel of the stock, all matching. You will see an old repair to a hairline crack running horizontally in the Butt Stock. The repair is solid, however can be improved easily cosmetically. This rifle is untouched and mostly toned to a very nice even blue / plum patina, mostly blue. The bore is amazing for this early 73. The rifling is strong with no damage observed anywhere. Shiny from breech to muzzle I will rate the bore an 8.5 on a 1 to 10 scale. This second model was ordered in .38-40 indicated clearly on the Barrel and unpolished Brass Follower. Please phone Tommy at (760)-912-3761 or e-mail all questions and concerns. $35.00 shipping. Insurance will be additional.
