Description:
Fine old American Bowie knife, not sure but probably blacksmith made frontier fighting knife. The heavy double edged blade is 13-1/2" long with a heavy dark patina. It's pattern is similar to the artillary short swords of the 1830's. It is ruggedly constructed and lacks the fine finish of the later mass-produced Bowie knives. It is fitted with a one piece round stag grip, a large brass cross guard with S-shaped quillions and a large "LIBERTY" coin dated "1836" riveted on for a butt cap which could represent the year it was made. It comes with the original hand sewn leather scabbard. A good solid, early Bowie and very likely a Civil War used knife carried by a southerner probably from Texas.
