PERIOD MODIFICATION of Antique SPENCER to Shotgun
Civil War Carbine Converted to Shotgun
Here we present an antique Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Saddle Ring Carbine, made circa 1863 in Boston, Massachusetts, that has been converted to a smoothbore shotgun sometime later. These lever-operated, breech-loading rifles were marvels of the time and had an impact on how war was to be fought in the future. Though their service life in the U.S. military was relatively short, the Spencer story includes Christopher Spencer, the inventor of the rifle, demonstrating and shooting with President Abraham Lincoln, who gave his full endorsement of the piece. This one would have been made during or around the Civil War. After the war, it was modified to be a 20-gauge shotgun and was likely a very affordable shotgun for a hunter.
The overall condition is very good. The barrel has a smooth, solid plum patina while the receiver shows faint case colors. The stock is in very good condition. The bore is smooth and bright. The action on this shotgun is excellent.
