Only about 5,000 were made from the end of the Civil War to the mid-1870s. Frank Wesson was the younger brother of Daniel B. Wesson, of Smith & Wesson, as well as Edwin Wesson, who was also a highly-esteemed gunsmith in the mid-to-late-1800s. The fame of his family’s name was not lost on Frank, but he was, in fact, a prolific firearms designer and maker in his own right. He was granted patents in 1859 and began producing rifles of this two-trigger configuration. The Civil War was a fantastic opportunity for many different inventors and over 20 different carbines were used during the conflict on the Union side. Frank Wesson made a version of his rifle in a .44 caliber rimfire carbine format that was specifically geared for Cavalry troops. He also made carbines and rifles in various calibers for the commercial market. This rifle is an example of a Second Type. It features a 30-1/4 inch octagonal barrel in .44 Henry Rimfire. The barrel is marked with Eagles and “FRANK WESSON WORCESTER MASS.” with patent dates of 1859 and 1862. There is a mount for a tang sight on the frame tang. Standard notch rear sight and fine globe front sight. The overall condition is good. The frame bears much of the nickel finish. The blued barrel retains about 70% of its finish. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore has good rifling. The action on this rifle is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30-1/4 inches. Caliber: .44 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
