This gun sports a double set trigger, which significantly improves the trigger pull over many non-set triggers. This would have made a good hunting rifle and many rifles like this were used in various conflicts throughout the 19th century. The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle: “From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination. Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.” The lock is marked “J. GOLCHER”. The Golchers were a family of gunsmiths originating in England and migrating to the United States, continuing to make firearm components throughout the 19th century. Joseph Golcher specialized in making locks for sale to gunsmiths who either didn’t have the time or the skills to make their own locks. The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces have a mixed patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in poor condition, showing a lot of hard use and a large crack around the lock inletting. The bore is dark & dusty. The action on this rifle is strong. An old workhorse that is awaiting a warm mantle to retire by. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 31-1/4 inches. Caliber: .40 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
