Description:

LARGE Caliber Antique J. HENRY & SON Plains Rifle

.52 Percussion Buffalo Rifle with Period Repairs

Here we present an antique J. Henry & Son Plains Rifle, manufactured in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania circa the mid-19th Century. James Henry & Son were gunsmiths in a large family of gunsmiths in the 1800s. The Henry family worked as gunsmiths in Pennsylvania for nearly two hundred years. James Henry and his son Granville Henry were the first in the Henry family to produce percussion, rather than flintlock, arms. They supplied many “plains rifles”, i.e. half-stock percussion arms with thick walled octagonal barrels, for the western trade and then after the Civil War, they made breechloading rifles and shotguns.

This rifle was the kind used to take down buffalo or defend against large & dangerous game in the pre-settled Frontier. It features a heavy, 35-1/2 inch octagonal barrel bored for .52 caliber ball. The top of the barrel is marked “J. HENRY/& SONS”. The lock is marked “P.S.J. & CO./WARRANTED”. The wrist and comb of the stock show period repairs to include a coil of hardened leather rawhide to hold things together, a task to which it was well-suited.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a dark patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in fair condition with period repairs and a lot of use. The bore is in great shape, clear with sharp rifling. The action on this rifle will hold half-cock but not full-cock.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 35-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Percussion
