SOLD  **  Reimer Johannsen Safari Magnum Model
DOUBLE SQUARE MAG MAUSER -- 416 RIGBY-

A MASTER GUNMAKER CUSTOM with QD RECKNAGEL MOUNTS

Planning a dangerous game hunt to Africa?  If you want to impress your PH, this rifle will do it – maker, action, and caliber.  This is the real deal!

A serious PH (professional hunter) rifle made for Africa by Germany’s premier gunmaker, Reimer Johannsen, known for their great proprietary actions, Balance is amazing!

Introduction:
REIMER JOHANNSEN number #JO2897, Meumunster, Germany, via New England Custom Gun Ltd,  416 Rigby, action  machined from a solid bar that includes a full machined bolt. This is a similar action as the Prectl action used today on Rigby magnum rifles, although Johannsen rifles mill their own actions and are handmade, custom-made individual guns, whereas Rigby’s are mass produced. If you were to compare this rifle with a Rigby, the Rigby has a crude checkering pattern designed for mass production, a poor fit of the barrel channel and the lack of attention to detail, especially plain wood. Steve Barnett of Barnett Fine Guns once told me the best big bore Mauser made today is the German made Reimer Johannsen rifle.  In the Reimer Johannsen class, we find Hartmann & Weiss and Waffen Jung, none of which are imported into the U.S. today.  These are the best rifles made in the world and all are made in Germany.

Rifle Description: This is a full & total custom by Reimer Johannsen, with their name and city of origin engraved on the wall of the receiver bridge, and on the right front bridge, their serial number, “J02897.”  Imported by NECG for a short period, there is a small inscription in script on the left receiver wall, “New England Custom Guns, Ltd.”  Below this and below the stock line, it is engraved “Johannsen, Meumunster, Germany.” The 60 cm (23”) Krieger barrel is fitted with an island rear express sight with one standing and two folding leaves inlaid with silver lines, a barrel band sling eye, a banded front ramp with a fold-up night sight, and a skeleton sight protector with a spring lock.

The quick detachable pivot mounts are the famous Recknagel system used now also by Rigby, machined into the double square receiver ring and bridge. Johannsen has been using this system for twenty years. The scope is the high-end Austrian-made Swarovski 1 ¼ -4 x 24 Habicht scope with the CD-1 reticle for fast target finding.  Other metal work includes a Johannsen’s machined deep belly straddle hinged floorplate with a center bow release, a bolt knob checkered with five-panel teardrops, a Recknagel 3-position safety, and a Recknagel adjustable trigger.

The select stock was chosen from a dense dark Walnut blank in Reimer Johannsen’s Grade 7 fancy, with a best oil finish resembling the highest grade rifles of Holland & Holland and the like.  It is a pure custom classic-shaped stock with shadow-line cheekpiece, wrap around point pattern checkering, and an Ebony forend tip.  Furniture includes a steel grip cap with trapdoor to house an extra front sight, a contoured rear sling swivel, and a 1” German Schaftkappe recoil pad yielding a LOP of 14 3/4". Weight is 4.1 kg (9 lbs.) without scope and 4.6 kg (10 lbs. 3 oz.) with.

Reimer Johannsen’s rifles are world renown, designed to handle the harsh environment of the African bush, crafted to the standards of the most discerning hunter, finished to perfection and built to withstand African conditions. Built on what is arguably the best large magnum length Mauser Magnum action ever made, Johannsen’s time-tested Double Square Bridge Magnum 98. The action has been hand honed and the bolt lugs lapped for silky-smooth operation…It includes a claw extractor, a Rechnagel 3-position safety (i.e. Winchester Model 70) and the bolt handle is the traditional straight Mauser style but lengthened (as preferred by PHs) an curved out for an easy grasp. The bolt knob is engraved with six panels.

Condition: The original blue remains at 99%. The original stock finish at 99%. The checkering is at 100%. The bore is new. This is a serious Big Game rifle by one of the greatest rifle makers, who has given it 100% attention to detail and built it to go the distance with a Magnum Action that has no apologies.

The MSRP for the current Safari Magnum model in 416 Rigby with upgrade wood, Rechangel trigger, safety, and scope rings is 21,950 Euros or $25,310.  Add $1,740 for the scope and the total package would cost $27,050.00
