Description:
Half Stock Percussion Rifle by A. P. McDermit, .36 caliber with 40” Octagonal barrel with 7 groove rifling. Top barrel flat marked “A.P. McDERMIT” inside banner along with engraved script “For J.D. White”. Top of Breech is marked “WP” inside banner with floral engraved percussion lock marked “RB”. Equipped with double set triggers with faceted triggerguard with finger spur. German Silver furniture throughout including cap box, wear plate, barrel escutcheons & old wrist repair. Raised cheekpiece has oval star inlay inscribed “Made/ 1854”. Good condition for its age with lock & triggers functioning. Metal surfaces show a plum brown patina throughout with front ramrod pipe having older repair. German Silver shows untouched tarnish. Maple stock is good showing typical scattered use marks with repair at wrist. Andrew P. McDermit (1827-1899) of Mason Co., VA(W.VA) is listed as a gunsmith in both the 1850 & 1860 Census. According to Paul Skinner’s article, “The Mason County, West Virginia Gunsmith know as A.P. McDermit”, Andrew was a as a Civil War hero who fought in numerous battles including Gettysburg.
