RARE Antique Burgess Deluxe Fancy Shotgun

  • 12 GA
  • Burgess Gun Co. located in Buffalo, NY
  • 30" Damascus barrel
  • Made between 1892-1899
  • Total estimates are unknown but total production estimates for rifles and shotguns combined are only a few thousand
  • Unique action by famed American inventor Andrew Burgess
  • He was also notable for his lever action rifles made by Whitney & Colt based on his patents
  • He established himself in business in 1892 for the manufacture of this unusual firearm
  • These firearms were distinguished by the iron sleeve fitted over the wrist of the stock which activates the bolt and breech mechanism when slid rearward
  • Original blue finish (blue left in many areas while some have turned plum brown)
  • Top of barrel reads "Patented Dec. 25 1883 MAR 2-86. FEB. 8-87. 4 CASES JULY 12-87. 2 CASES FEB. 8-87. NOV. 22-87. 2 CASES JULY 5-92. JULY 7-92 REISSUE 10555."
  • Fiddleback deluxe wood forearm with deluxe checkering
  • Deluxe pistol grip wood stock with checkering on grip and on thumb grip on metal
  • Proper Burgess butt plate with dog and woodcock
  • Action is very slick
  • Bore is good
  • No apparent dings in barrel or magazine tube
  • This company was purchased in it's entirety in 1899 by Winchester who withdrew the line in the market and made no further use of the patent
  • Manufacture was almost exclusively confined to 12 GA shotguns
  • This shotgun is considered a Deluxe Fancy model that is very rare
  • These guns were popular among police, Wells Fargo, American Express, US Marshals, prisons & bank employees
  • Second only in rarity to Burgess folding shotgun
  • Forearm has no splits or checks
  • Stock has scratches and handling marks but no splits or checks
