Antique MAYNARD Model 1873 No. 6 Rifle in .38
With Tang Mounted Peep Sight
Here we present an antique Maynard Model 1873 No. 6 Rifle, made circa the 1870s in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. This design got its first toehold in the market during the American Civil War as a cavalry carbine. Dr. Edward Maynard was gifted, and while he was known for his practice of dentistry, he was also an inventor as well. After the war, this company was one of the few gun makers who stayed in business to compete against companies like Winchester. The Maynard system remained a single shot, breech loading affair, and this simplicity contributed to its allure. Being so simple made it easy to change barrels, allowing the customer to swap calibers very easily.
This specimen is known as the No. 6, being chambered for .38 caliber centerfire with a tang-mounted aperture sight. The left side of the frame of the gun is marked “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTED/MAY 217, 1851/DEC 6, 1859”. The right side is marked “MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS”.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a smooth, gray patina with traces of blue finish. The markings are legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is clear and bright with strong rifling. The trigger/hammer action is functional, though the firing pin mechanism is absent.
