Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique COLT Model 1851 Navy Revolver

Attributed to Sergeant James Comings

Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Navy Revolver, made in 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. The 1851 Navy was one of Colt’s most famous and successful lines, reaching a production total of 257,348 from 1850 to 1873 (right up to the time of SAA production) from both Hartford and London factories. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. Many of these saw service during the conflict on both sides. There were some military purchases and lots of private purchases by soldiers going off to war.

This example is attributed to Sergeant (later Captain) James Comings of the 15th Regiment New Jersey Infantry. He enlisted with the rank of sergeant before leaving as a captain. He was involved with his regiment at such notable actions as Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. With this revolver is included his pocket watch, portable shaving mirror, a Daguerreotype of James, a portrait with his regiment (likely from after the war), and a Bible. Oral tradition has the Bible coming from his mother-in-law, “Mrs. Payton Anderson”, as it is signed on a blank leaf near the back. The front of the Bible has the name “E.D. ANDERSON/Co I. 15th R.N.J.V” for Company I 15th Regiment of the New Jersey Volunteers. Handwritten on the title page is “Mother gave it to me—send it to mother.—his last words”. These dying words do not appear to necessarily apply to James Comings, but perhaps his brother- or father-in-law who perished in action before James was given this Bible. They both served in the New Jersey Infantry after all, and NPS records to confirm this. The Bible’s publishing date is 1862. There are several markings on this revolver. The makers mark is on the top of the barrel; “ADDRESS COL. SAM COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”.  The left side of the frame is marked with both “COLTS PATENT” and “36CAL”. Battle of Campeche cylinder scene is well preserved.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The cylinder scene is visible. The bore is dark. The grips are in great shape, showing some light sanding marks. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a very neat time capsule that comes to us intact after all these years.
