Description:

As the American West advanced, so did the main towns for stocking the needed hardware.  First it was New York City, then St. Louis, and by the 1870’s it was Chicago and Cincinnati, followed by Omaha, Kansas City, and Houston.  By the 1880’s this list included Denver, Ogden, Portland, and Colt opened their San Francisco office in 1888.  Guns shipped to these towns usually traveled further west.

This Colt has matching serial numbers on frame, trigger guard, and backstrap.  The gate number 4018 also appears on underside of the frame.  The unusually-nice grips fit perfectly as absolutely original, with both sides showing only slight wear to checkering.  Inside the left grip are the scratched markings “241075” and “L H”, with the right grip having only “D W M” lightly scratched.  It is suspected that the one grip was numbered by a previous owner, possibly in case the gun was stolen and outer numbers were removed.  These grips are perfect, with no chips anywhere.  It is rare to find a Colt SAA with original grips anymore!

The gun cocks crisply and locks up with the expected tightness.  Both the safety and half cock notches are functional, but the half cock notch has been slightly deepened.  The hammer has the correct knurling for the period.

All markings are deep and clear, including the serial numbers, barrel address, patent dates, circled rampant Colt, “Colt Frontier Six Shooter” on side of barrel, and factory inspector marks.  The 1st and 3rd “T” in “Colt Frontier Six Shooter” have slightly broken cross bars, as is correct in this serial range.  The one-line barrel address is also the correct one for the period of manufacture.

This gun’s surfaces are gray to dark-gray overall, with a slight sheen.  There are hints of original blue on the upper backstrap and trigger guard.  The frame case colors have faded to a smooth gray with mottled silvery areas.  See picture of all six cylinder panel views, with the hammer shown in different positions.  The front of the cylinder shows some porosity, with a minimal gap between it and the rear of barrel.  The rear of this cylinder is smooth gray.  Chambers are smooth and clean (pictures show oil inside).

The bore has strong lands and grooves, somewhat shiny with scattered light pitting.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I would call this one a 7.0 bore condition.  The steel front sight remains in its original 0.52” x 0.29” tall configuration.  The ejector head is perfectly straight and fits nicely to the underside of barrel.  Amazingly no one destroyed the bottom of the barrel in trying to pull the cylinder pin with a pair of plyers.  There are some normal dings and bruises on barrel just ahead of cylinder pin head (see in picture, as magnified).  Likewise, the cylinder pin head shows only minor marks left by plyers, sparing the original series of lathe-turned rings.  Under that cylinder pin is a tiny “44”, marked for bore size, which was a factory practice.

All screws in this gun are the originals, and each is way-above-average as for retaining sharp slots free of previous screw-driver damage.

This Colt comes with a $150 Factory letter confirming that #241075 was a 44-40, 7-1/2", Blue, Stocks Not Listed, Shipped to Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co., Chicago, Ill, 5 Guns, on 4-16-1903.  Here the shipping ledger notation about type of stocks was left blank, because these five guns were equipped with the standard hard rubber.

An all-original Colt SAA!
