Description:
Presented here is an unfired very fine example of the scarce English Pattern 1856 2-band iron mounted Sergeant's Rifle. The .577 caliber rifled bore appears unfired. The barrel retains a generous amount of thin original blue, the iron mounts are smooth clean steel retaining traces of the original blue finish. The case hardened lock and hammer are perfectly smooth clean steel showing light aged case colors. There is no pitting on any of the metal parts and the fine oil finished European walnut stock is in superb condition, showing original feathering in the grain and super crisp edges around the lock, stock flat, and ramrod channel. All the metal markings are perfect with a crisp English crown, 'Tower' and '1860' date stamps on the lock plate, and .577 caliber markings and English proofs at the left barrel breech. The lock mechanics are as new and all the original screws are in fine condition. The barrel is fitted with an adjustable long range folding ladder rear sight and a bayonet lug with short lead-in bar. The rifle retains its original bright finished ramrod, chain fastened nipple protector, a period English style thong fastened black leather sling. The accompanying scarce bayonet is cut for the short lead-in lug and fits the gun fine. It is fitted with a 2 piece slab black leather checkered grip and has the import Kirschbaum "Knight's Head" logo stamped at the ricasso. The blade is clean semi-bright steel as are the mounts. The fine black leather scabbard has clean iron mounts as well. The oddly shaped yataghan blade has sliced through part of the scabbard at the edge but the stitching remains complete and tight. These 2-band English rifles were imported by both North and South and saw extensive use; they are usually found in well worn condition. This gun remains in original as manufactured condition and has not been cleaned, polished, or disturbed in any way. This is the best condition example I have come across in many years, it would make a great companion piece displayed with the P1853 3-band Enfield rifle-musket.  If you want to buy just the rifle, the price for it without the bayonet is $3,600.
