Description:
Presented here is a scarce U.S. Model 1858 Springfield Cadet Musket. Only 2501 of these Cadet sized muskets were produced at the Springfield Armoury in 1858 and 1859. Those dated 1858 (type one) are fitted with a long range folding ladder rear sight, those dated 1859 are fitted with the short two leaf folding rear sight. This example is a type two dated 1859 fitted with the two leaf rear sight. Although these muskets were intended to be issued to the West Point cadets to replace the then obsolete M1851 Cadet musket, there is no documented evidence that they were sent to West Point. Instead, with the outbreak of War in 1861 it is reaonable to conclude that all were immediately pressed in to field service to arm the volunteer regiments of the Union armies, especially since most surving specimens are usually found in well worn heavily used condition. The Cadet musket is based on the regulation U.S. Model 1855 rifle-musket, but has smaller proportions for Cadet use. The barrel is two inches shorter than the M1855 rifle-musket with the forestock accordingly shorter. The three spring fastened barrel bands are appropriately equally spaced. The lock is the same as used on the M1855 rifle-musket with the Maynard patent automatic tape priming system. The buttstock and comb are shorter and fitted with a smaller buttplate. The barrel is .58 caliber and rifled with three lands and grooves.  This example remains in exceptional condition for one of these. All the iron parts are clean bright steel showing no rust pitting. All of the metal markings are extremely crisp and the fine full length American black walnut stock retains a clear ESA (Springfield Master Armourer Erskine S. Allin) final inspection cartouche at the left flat. The stock has been cleaned and re-oiled at some time in the past but retains good edges and the metal parts do not sit higher than the wood. There is a small stress crack about one inch long coming off the rear of the lockplate and one at the forward lock screw escutcheon, some very minor chipping in the ramrod channel, but no other damage is seen. The rifle retains its original correct length and threaded ramrod and both sling swivels. The lock mechanics are complete and the tape priming mechanism functions as new. All screws are very fine. The rear sight, band springs, and nipple retain nearly all their original blued finish. The bore shows strong rifling its entire length but is lightly frosted indicating the gun had been fired but not properly cleaned after firing. This is the best condition example of this scarce and hard to find M58 Cadet musket I have come across in many years of collecting and would make a nice addition to any Springfield or Civil War arms collection..
