Antique SWIVEL Barrel Pistol by SMITH of LONDON
.38 Caliber O/U Percussion Pistol for Defense
Here we present an antique British Swivel Barrel Percussion Pistol by Smith, made circa the 1830s in London. This pistol was small enough to fit inside a coat or pants pocket and benefitted from a double barrel rather than a single, which was rather the norm in those days. Superposing the barrels one over the other still made for a slender overall package. This pistol operates by manually cocking the hammer after the first shot then rotating the barrel cluster to present the next one ready to fire. Each barrel is proof marked. The barrels have light engraving at the muzzles. The hammer, frame, trigger guard, and pommel cap are nicely engraved. The left side of the frame is marked “SMITH LONDON”.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are mostly bright. The engraving and markings are clear. The wooden grip is in good shape with a little chip off the left side. The bores are is good condition, smooth. The action is excellent. Here is a stately little British pistol that would have been concealed and carried for self-defense in the early to mid-19th Century!
