Antique COLT THUNDERER M1877 Revolver Made 1883
.41 Colt Double Action 6-Shooter
Here we present an antique Colt Model 1877 “Thunderer” Revolver, manufactured in 1883 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1877 was offered in three different calibers, which led to the three unofficial names. The “Lightning” which was chambered in .38 Long Colt. The “Thunderer” which was chambered in .41 Colt, and the “Rainmaker” which was chambered in .32 Colt.
Neither "Lightning" nor "Thunderer" were Colt designations and were not used by the factory in any reference materials. Both terms were coined by Benjamin Kittredge, one of Colt's major distributors. Kittredge was also responsible for the term "Peacemaker" for the Colt Single Action Army. The 1877 "Thunderer" in .41 caliber was the preferred weapon of Billy the Kid and was his weapon of choice when he was killed by Pat Garrett in 1881.
The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. C2/HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame is marked “PAT.SEPT. 18, 1871/PAT.SEPT.15, 1874/PAT.JAN. 19, 1875”.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. The Colt trademarked hard rubber grips are worn quite smooth and in good condition. The bore is in very good shape, clean with good rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice example of Colt’s more advanced double action six-shooter!
