ORNATE HIGH ART GERMAN WHEELOCK RIFLE BUTTSTOCK AND LOCK CIRCA 1580’S. 16” o/a with 9” lock plate. Probable sea bag gun with barrel and forend lost. Fabulous bone, mother of pearl and brass wire inlaid stock and incredibly ornate Wheelock with “SEA MONSTER” cock and high relief floral wheel cover. Tail of lock with masque of “NEPTUNE” in relief. Previously sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York in their Work of Art December 8&9, 1978 sale lot #113. Exceptionally fine. With copy of the original Sotheby sale catalog.
