Description: Serial #26547, 8.15 x 46R, 31 1/2" fluted, octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a splendid, Haenel-made rifle that retains 97-98% of the original blue finish on the barrel with only some hints of mild freckling in a few spots, and some trace silvering along the high edges. The frame has extensive floral scroll engraving with a large circular vignette on the right side framing a silhouette portrait of a man in Tyrolean garb with slung rifle on his shoulder (probably the gun's original owner). The complicated lever has darkened over time, but the original color case-hardening can still be seen, and the engraved side levers retain most of their original straw color as well. A very small and unobtrusive import mark is present on the underside of the barrel just ahead of the forend tip. The forend is wedge-fastened with a long take-down lever on the underside, and the European walnut is extensively decorated with Germanic, deep relief carving in an ornate floral pattern that matches the receiver engraving. The buttstock is typically complex with thumb-rest, cheek-piece, and long, hooked butt. The wood features the same deep relief carving with red deer stag and doe vignette on the right; a large Auerhahn on the left. The rifle retains the removable front sight, rear barrel sight, and rear peep sight with wide aperture disk. According to the previous owner's notes (included with the rifle) it was purchased by him in 1998 from Dangel Buechsenmacherai of Ulm, whilst attending a sport show in Munich. Dangel were selling it on consignment for a descendant of the original owner. This is a simply spectacular German target rifle, chambered in the quintessential German target cartridge, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
