Description:
This is perhaps one of Smith & Wesson’s most important models. The 29 was intended to allow the shooter to have a revolver that had far better knockdown power than any 357 Magnum chambered revolver. This is a “Dash-2” variation. This was the last variation of the 29 to have the traditional S&W pinned barrel. Other features included are: an 8 3/8-inch half-lug barrel, square butt frame, .500-inch serrated target trigger, .500-inch target hammer, red ramp front sight insert, and white outline on the rear sight blade. The serrated backstrap has 10 grooves. The grips are traditional checkered wood. Smith & Wesson refers to these as “target stocks.” The serial number, according to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition, indicates this gun was manufactured between 1977 and 1978. It comes with the original box, cleaning rod and brushes, and paperwork. The 29’s popularity increased drastically in 1971 with the release of the film Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood. Although the 29 he normally carried had the 6.5” barrel, some scenes as well as posters depicted him with the 8.375” barrel. Indeed, of the two 29 revolvers used in the film, one was a 6.5” and the other an 8.375”. For the actual shooting sequences however, a Model 25 in 45 Colt was used as the 5-in-1 blanks were plentiful and 44 Mag blanks were not available. In the real world, the Model 29 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting. It has also been used by law enforcement, although never on an “as issue” basis. This one is pre-owned, but its condition indicates mainly placement in storage rather with infrequent use. The cleaning brush in the case is dirty so the bore was cleaned after use. There are two very small spots of pitting on the revolver, one on the cylinder and one on the right side of the barrel. Both are shown in the pictures. The inside of the case is a little worn, but this is not unusual given the materials used and the revolver’s weight. On the positive side, there are only light powder burns at the front of the cylinder. The bore is in mint condition and appears as though it left the factory yesterday. Another, appreciable aspect of this beautiful firearm is that, unlike later S&W models, this one has no trigger lock. This is a desirable feature of the older S&W revolvers and the expression “pre-lock” is a common denotation of this feature. This revolver is in excellent condition and would be an excellent addition to any S&W owner’s collection.
