Description:
This is a really cool and rare Egyptian military carbine called the Rasheed. There were a total of ONLY 8000 made in 1960 with only a small percentage of that production total imported into the United States. The Rasheed is chambered in the 7.62x39 caliber cartridge that the AK is chambered in, and the carbine's design was derived from the full size Hakim 8mm semi-auto battle rifle. The rifle was actually designed by the Swedish engineer Erik Eklund who also originally designed the Hakim. The semi-auto Rasheed uses an adjustable (adjustment key is located in relief-cut on top of the handguard) direct gas impingement system for it's operation and features a 20.5" inch barrel with a folding blade-style bayonet resembling the design used on the Russian SKS. It has a 10-rd detachable box magazine but was designed to be primarily loaded with 10-rd stripper clips rather than carry a lot of additional magazines. The sight design uses a tangent-style rear sight with graduations from 100 to 1000 meters and an adjustable front sight with a protective hood that can be adjusted for both windage and elevation to set the carbine's "zero". While the design functioned well and was both tough and reliable, soldiers complained that under heavy sustained fire the receiver became too hot to touch due to the hot gasses cycling the action. The Rasheed was doomed to fail by the perfected design of the AK47, which fired the same cartridge, was cheap to produce, and had full-auto capability. This particular Rasheed is an all-matching example in great original condition. The bore is in very good condition with just a little frosting but still showing nice sharp rifling the length of the bore. The only negative we can find on this rifle is that the rear sight slide has been repaired. The sight still functions fine but the slide must have cracked at some point and been repaired. There is a close up picture provided in the listing of this repair. The stock is in great shape and is structurally sound overall. There are two small hairline cracks showing in the top of the wrist behind the receiver but they do not go deep into the wood and are strictly cosmetic. There is also a small crack at the butt on the keel of the stock behind the buttplate, but it too appears to be stabilzed and we cannot make it open or move despite putting a good deal of pressure on it. From what we have found, these small cracks are almost expected on these Rasheeds as the stocks were made of Middle Eastern-sourced wood that was not as good as American or European Walnut, etc. All of the controls on this carbine work 100% like the day it left the factory. The action is nice and tight and works smoothly, and it goes into battery with authority. The rear receiver-mounted safety toggle switch works as it was designed to, and the magazine release functions perfectly in either position. The original two-stage trigger is actually quite good for a military rifle and would certainly help with accuracy. This is really a neat and unique military rifle and it is certainly worthy of any serious gun collection. This Rasheed is a very nice example of a very rare and sought-after design, and should be an excellent investment long-term.
