Description:

INDIAN WAR Antique SPRINGFLD 1879 Trapdoor CARBINE

Springfield Armory Model 1879 in .45-70 GOVT

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine, made in 1881 by Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. Only about 15,000 of these were made. The trapdoor was an invention of Erskine S. Allin of Springfield Armory at the end of the Civil War. The first were actually conversions of Civil War Rifle Muskets, but they were later manufactured as new in the trapdoor configuration. These were powerful rifles capable of connecting at long range, but they were single shot in a day when repeaters were becoming the norm. Despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.

The top of the breech block is marked “U.S./MODEL/873”.  The lock is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873”. There is a cartouche on the left side of the stock marked “SWP/1881” for S.W. Porter. This one is also marked as an arsenal rebuilt as there is a 5-pointed star at the end of the serial number.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are turning dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in great shape. The bore is very good with strong rifling. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.
