The Remington Army along with the 1860 Colt Army were considered the two best sidearms of the US Army during the American Civil War, 1861-1865. During the 19th century and even today many consider the Remington Army the finest handgun of the Civil War. Remington revolvers served throughout the war. After a major fire at the Colt revolver factory in 1864 demand for Remington revolvers increased and E. Remington & Sons worked hard to fill government orders. After the Civil War, Remington Army revolvers continued in service on the western frontier until replaced by Colt Model 1873 Army cartridge revolvers in 1874. Most Remington Army revolvers saw hard use in both military and civilian hands. A small number survived in fine to excellent condition. This Remington Army would be rated as one of the best of that small US Army issued group. It may be unfired since the interior of the cylinder chambers show nearly all their original blued finish. CONDITION: This Remington is in excellent original condition retaining 97% strong factory blued finish with a bit of high edge wear, a few spots of storage rust, and some light handling marks. All markings and US inspector's marks are sharp. The bore is excellent and shiny showing little or no use with a few pin-head spots of storage rust/dirt. Mechanical functions and lock-up are excellent. The cylinder arbor head retains nearly all its blued finish. The hammer retains all its casehardened finish and the trigger retains nearly all its blued finish. The screws are excellent. The original walnut grips retain nearly all their original finish with 'OWA' inspector's mark on the left grip and small inspector marks on the bottom of the grips. An exceptional example of the famous Remington .44 Army revolver for the Civil War and/or Remington collector which would be verfy difficult to up-grade.
