WELLS FARGO Marked Antique REMINGTON Shotgun
Stage Coach Shotgun with Wells Fargo Badge
Here we present an antique Remington Model 1889 Hammer Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1890s in Ilion, New York. This double barrel shotgun was cut to a handier length for use as a stagecoach gun, like those Wells Fargo might have employed on their routes to defend against bandits and other ne’er-do-wells. The right side of the stock bears a badge marked “W.F. & CO./GUARD/EXPRESS/SAN FRANCISCO”. The left side has “WELLS FARGO & CO’S. S.F. CAL. EXPRESS” stamped into the wood. In all likelihood, these markings were added later but are obviously indicative of the enduring allure of the legendary Old West mythos. Regardless, this piece has a lot of eye appeal and would look great on display. The locks are marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO.” The top of the barrels is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.” The tubes still bear a strong Damascened pattern.
The overall condition is fair. The barrels retain a strong Damascus pattern with an even gray patina throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The stock has been repaired at the wrist. The bores are dark. The actions on this shotgun are functional. Here is one that will be sure to start a conversation!
