Description:

German MAUSER Antique Model 1879 REICHSREVOLVER

With Multiple Unit Markings on Pommel

Here we present an antique Imperial German Model 1879 Reichsrevolver by Mauser & Cie, made in 1882 in Oberndorf, Germany. This massive, single action revolver was adopted in 1879. It is chambered in 10.6x25mm Rimmed German Ordnance, which is thought to have been developed from Smith & Wesson’s .44 Russian cartridge, developed for Russia in 1870. This revolver features a round barrel with a distinctly German rounded muzzle. Operation is much like Colt’s Single Action Army Revolver with a single action mechanism and loading gate on the right side of the frame. There is a lanyard ring on the bottom of the pommel so as not to be separated from the soldier while riding a horse. It was issued to cavalry units and used all the way through the Great War, after which it was retired from official service. Unsurprisingly, it continued to be used all the way through World War II even though it was thoroughly obsolete.

The left side of the frame is marked “GEBR.MAUSER&CIE./1880/OBERNDORF”. The frame in front of the cylinder is dated “1882”. The pommel is unit marked “B.6.Ch.1.8”, which has been struck through so that a later unit mark was recognized “B.6.A6.75”.

The overall condition is very good. The original blue finish is about 40%. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. The wooden grips are in great shape. The bore is in good shape, semi-bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong & crisp. Here is a fascinating antique German revolver that saw many great and terrible events transpire in its time, made by Mauser!
