ENGRAVED Antique BACON Underhammer BOOT Pistol
Antebellum Single Shot Boot Pistol
Here we present an antique Bacon & Co. Underhammer Percussion Boot Pistol, made circa the 1850s by Thomas Bacon in Norwich, Connecticut. About 500 estimated produced. This pistol would have competed against the likes of Henry Deringer, Ethan Allen, and Samuel Colt in the years leading up to the American Civil War. This pistol would have been intended to be used for self-defense, and the barrel would have fit into the top of a boot. The 4-inch barrel is half-octagon, half-round. The frame is modestly engraved. This piece features a hammer mounted on the bottom of the frame, keeping it out of the shooter’s line of sight and making the mechanism even simpler than other percussion pistols. Firing mechanism is single action. One barrel flat is marked “BACON & CO./NORWICH CT” and another is marked “CAST STEEL”. Assembly number is “34”.
The overall condition is very good. The markings and engravings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut grips are in good shape. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a very attractive & scarce pistol from 1850s Norwich!
