Description:
***SOLD***
JP Sauer & Sohn Drilling combination gun, chambered in 12ga and 8x57mmJR.
This rifle has beautifully figured walnut furniture, with some extra features you may not see on a run-of-the-mill sporting guns. As seen in the photos, there is a small hatch on the heel that stores 4 extra 8x57mmJR shells. The hatch still has the green felt and most of the color case hardening. Moving further up the stock, a cheek rest protrudes out of the left side, allowing for added comfort while holding your cheek-weld in place. In addition to the very fine and precise checkering, there is a cartouche placed on the bottom of the pistol grip, bearing the initials "AJ" in gold damascene, presumably the initials of the individual who once bought and owned this fine gun. As for the receiver; there isnt one spot on the receiver that isn't embellished by fine, ornate engraving. The makers mark is located on the belly of the receiver, nearby more ornate engraving and the small image of a man holding a rifle by his side. The patina is actually quite nice on the metal parts, though they can be cleaned (preferably by an experienced gunsmith, so as to not damage the engraving). The controls appear similar to a standard double barreled shotgun, however they are notably different. The sliding lever on the tang, activated by pushing down the small button on top and pushing forward or back, selects your barrels. The rear position, reading "Schrot" (German for "Shot"), acts as a normal double barreled shotgun, with the front and rear triggers firing the left and right barrels. When the sliding tang lever is pushed forward, reading "Kugel" (German for "Bullet"), the front trigger fires the 8x57mmJR barrel, and leaves the rear trigger inoperable. The safety lever is located on the left sideplate, and can be easily operated by the shooters thumb. Its also worth noting one of the guns most interesting features, which is when the sliding tang lever is pushed forward to operate the rifle barrel, the small rear sight on the barrel flips up (almost like magic), and when it is moved back to the shotgun setting, the sight flips back down. Overall, this gun has certainly seen some use over the years, but it appears to have been well cared for, as the cosmetics are good, and the bores look fantastic with sharp rifling in the rifle barrel. Dating and identifying this particular Drilling has proven difficult, however we were able to confirm through JP Sauer & Sohn that it is likely a pre-WWII model. The action remains as tight as it was when it was first made, and everything works flawlessly, with the smoothness that you'd expect from a hand made, hand-fitted firearm. Length of pull is a comfortable 14", and both shotgun barrels are full choke. Please refer to the photos to further assess the condition of this beautiful firearm.
