During the 1890's, these early SRC's were produced in much smaller numbers compared to the sporting rifles and almost always saw hard use. Most were purchased as tools or utility guns and carried on horseback, etc. They were used by Cowboys, Lawmen, Outlaws, Hunters, Mexican Revolutionaries, and even used by the US Army during World War One to guard the Spruce forests in the Northwest United States. Today, it is hard to find a good example with a Pre-1898 number and this one while showing use, is still in pretty Good shape. Serial number is in the 42,000 range and was shipped in 1897. As a member of the BBHC, Shipping Date, Caliber, and Carbine Configuration were confirmed by the original Winchester records housed at the Cody Museum. Standard carbine configuration with 20" round barrel, full magazine, carbine semi-crescent buttplate, ladder rear sight, and saddle ring. All markings are the correct early style with 3 lines on the upper tang with the Browning Patent Date, 2 line Barrel address at 12 O'Clock (top) position, and the decorative Victorian era dipped border around the hammer checkering. Overall Condition Grades to NRA Antique Good Plus to Very Good. The metal has 10% original Receiver blue around the saddle ring and protected areas with the balanced worn to a light grey patina. Barrel and magazine tube are mostly worn to silvery grey patina with traces of blue in protected areas. Lever shows approx. 10% original faint case colors just below the action with balance faded to a nickel silver. Hammer has some shadows of molten colors...on right profile...otherwise silvered out. The screws are in Good to Very Good condition throughout. Very Good markings throughout. The wood is early Winchester Walnut with all the correct early profiles. Very Good Overall and has never been sanded or redone with nice wood to metal fit. It shows some scratches and a minor gouge on the right side of the stock near the action. Action cycles correctly. Hammer works on half and full cock positions. Bore is your typical 19th Century 38-55 black powder bore with decent rifling and some scattered pits. Good overall with no rings, bulges, or bad spots. No extra holes in the metal or wood. No modifications. Factory original sights inclued the ladder rear graduated 2-9 Hundred Yards (100% factory correct) with nice graduations and lots of origina blue on the base. The front is your standard post with the early style German Silver blade. Nice little early Antique Winchester 1894 carbine in the best Caliber!
