Description:
Sale Pending. This is a very early Smith and Wesson Double Action Pocket Revolver in .32 Caliber.  The first 30 guns DA's in 32 Caliber had a rare squared sideplate which was quickly followed by an improved oval design.  This is one of the first ones with the oval sideplate and the serial number is 753 which dates to Circa 1880.  Matching numbers on the frame, latch, cylinder, and the barrel.  According to Flayderman's Guide, the 2nd Model 32 DA came standard with a 3 Inch Barrel but this one has a 3 1/2" Barrel.  I recently talked to an advanced Smith and Wesson Collector who told me this one was only the 4th example of a 3 1/2" with an early number in all of his years of collecting.  It must have been special ordered before new barrels for the DA's were available because the patent dates only go up to 1877 as found on the Model 1 1/2 .32 Single Action and there are no 1879 or 1880 dates pertaining to the Double Action.  To fill the order, Smith and Wesson had to take a 3 1/2"
barrel from a Single Action Model 1 1/2 and install it on this gun.  The barrel has not one but two serial numbers...one on the right side of the latch well from a Model 1 1/2 and the 753 number on the left side of the well.  Both are definitely factory.  It wasn't easy to photograph the two tiny numbers but I got a fairly decent image so you can see what I'm talking about.  See Photo.  This reminds me of an early Winchester 1873 Rifle I once owned with a 3 digit serial number.  It had order 30" Barrel Special Order Barrel which was clearly built using a Winchester Model 1866 Barrel.  The same thing occurs with early Winchester Model 1892 carbines that used 1873 barrels, buttplates, and bands to fill early orders when dedicated parts weren't yet ready.  So this is kind of a neat find to see the same thing with a Smith and Wesson.  Overall condition is NRA Antique Fine with 93% original nickel overall.  Trigger guard and barrel latch retain most of their original blue.  Good case colors remainon on the profiles of the trigger and hammer.  Checkered hard rubber grips are in Excellent Condition.  Comes in an original Smith and Wesson Box in Fair condition with the lid hinge hanging by threads...but complete with a good instruction label.
