Description:
This is a nice example of the standard Winchester Model 1876 Sporting Rifle Configuration with 28 inch octagon barrel, full magazine, and crescent rifle buttplate.  Caliber is 45-60.  The 1876 was introduced at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, PA that same year which earned it the nickname "The Centennial Model".  It used the same toggle link action as all Winchester Models but was substantially bulked up and lenghtened to handle larger more powerful cartridges for larger game and better range. The Serial number of this one is in the 31,000 range which dates its production towards the end of 1882  according to the Winchester Book by George Madis.  Standard sights include ladder rear sight and standard front with German Silver blade and correct solid base.  Caliber markings located on the brass cartridge lifter and top flat of barrel ahead of receiver.  Model marking is on the upper tang and 2 line Winchester barrel address with 1860 Henry and 1866 King's Improvement Patents are on the top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight.  Buttplate has trapdoor for a set of jointed cleaning rods which are not present.  The internal assembly numbers on the frame, stock channel for the upper tang, and bottom of the buttplate are all matching.  Condition-wise, it grades to NRA Antique Fine with 50% original blue on the receiver which is thinning with balance turned to a smooth brown patina.  The blue is stronger towards the back of the frame, protected areas, and thinner on the sideplates, down to speckled original blue mixed throughout the patina at the front of the receiver.  The loading port has some nice traces of fire blue  in protected areas (see photo).  The hammer and lever have mostly turned to a smooth brown patina with some silver remnants of case colors here and there with a little bit of color showing on the right profile of the hammer.  The brass loading block is nice with no dings or bulges, and a clear "45-60" caliber designation.  The barrel and magazine tube show 25% and 35% original blue respectively, mostly towards the protected areas, with the balance turned to a very smooth medium brown patina.  The original walnut stock and forend are in Fine condition with light handling marks and some fine scratches.  Great wood to metal fit that is tight and even throughout with quite a bit of original varnish on the stock that is dull and thinning.  No cracks or repairs.  Action cycles nicely, lever pulls up like it should with no sag.  Dust cover works.  The bore Very Good with no rings or bulges.  If you're looking for a nice Model 1876 with a desirable octagon barrel and larger caliber, this would be a great addition to any Winchester collection.
