Payment Types Accepted: Description: Burnside Carbine, Model of 1864/Fifth Model; 1864 Providence, Rhode Island Production/Unissued; .54 Very Low Serial Number Beautiful, unissued Fifth Model Burnside Carbine...this exquisitely preserved example was manufactured in early 1864 at the Providence factory, and remains in remarkably fine condition. The gun has standard features including blued 21" round barrel, as well as blued action set into a case hardened receiver, with blued trigger guard and case hardened furniture, including buttplate, set into a Walnut stock. The markings are standard, and include the address on the locks as well as the receiver in front of the breech, a poorly struck 'Cast Steel 1863' on the barrel, George Curtis inspector view marks('GC') on virtually all components, with the standard, final, boxed military acceptance cartouche notably absent on the left of the stock. This may be explained by the carbine's low serial number-'91', as well as the inscription on the left of the stock. Written in pen, is the date, March 22nd, 1864, and the (mostly) illegible name of a Dr., possibly Herbert Lowe(see pictures). Largely irrelevant to Burnside collectors, in this case, the low serial number(91), combined with a barrel date of 1863, receiver date of 1864, the presence of military inspector marks with no final acceptance cartouche, as well as the inscription on the left of the stock, suggest that this may have been a very early Fifth Model that was set aside for presentation. Apart from the history, which presents a potentially rewarding research project for the Civil War enthusiast, the carbine is simply an amazingly preserved antique, showing no sign of use, with little loss of original factory finish, superb mechanics, and a mint bore. A stunning example that would be almost impossible to improve upon, this presentation Fifth Model Burnside represents a remarkable find for the advanced collector. Condition Excellent and unissued, the gun has seen no refinish or restoration, and possibly no use post-factory testing. The barrel and trigger guard retain better than 90% factory blue, with oxidation turning to patina over the trigger guard, as well as build-up lubricant and traces of operational wear. There is edge wear around the muzzle and on the the high edges, with no rust or pitting on any metal surface. The case hardening on the furniture and receiver is at 92%, with light carbon spotting and oxidation. The Walnut stock has few handling marks and rates as very fine. Mechanically flawless with smooth action and tight lockup, the bore-bright with unfaded rifling and no sign of rust, pitting, frost or abrasion-i nearly mint.
