Description:
This is a nice example of a Forehand & Wadsworth Pocket Revolver from the 1870's. This particular Model is similar to the F&W Swamp Angel in .41 caliber, only its in .38 Rimfire which was nicknamed the "BULL DOG"...and stamped as such in the top strap. Once the Rollin White Patent (which was held by Smith and Wesson) expired in the early 1870's, numerous companies entered the cartridge revolver market. While many of these competitors made pocket revolvers cheaply and of inferior materials and workmanship, Forehand & Wadsworth put out some of the better made Revolvers during the 1870's and 1880's. The fit and finish were nice and as is the case with this revolver, F&W even used Rosewood for the grips like Smith and Wesson. Overall condition grades to NRA Antique Excellent Plus with 98% origina nickel plating on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. Hammer shows 70% of its fragile nitre blue. Nice barrel markings with 1861, 1871, and 1875 Patent Dates. The hollow cylinder pin still retains its removeable cleaning rod/cartridge ejector (See Photo). Nice action. Birdshead style Grips have a few nicks and small dings near the base, otherwise Excellent with original varnish. Very Good screws and pins throughout. This would make a great addition to an early American Cartridge Revolver Collection. Antique.
