Description:
Serial #745, .461 Gibbs, 33 1/2" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very handsome rifle that retains 85-90% of a maker reapplied blue finish with some faint streaks of gray along its length. The barrel still has the original front and rear military style open sights, with an additional dovetail (now filled) added to the long knox-form at the breech. The action has a darkly mottled gray patina with traces of original bright nitre blue on the protected portions of the underlever. There are a few small spots of mild freckling scattered about, as well as some deeper pitting on the handle of the lever pin on the right side. The full-length walnut forend has numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes in the old varnish finish, and there is a small wax-filled repair on the right side where it meets the frame, and some chipping around the forend pin on both sides. The buttstock has a commensurate amount of handling marks and minor blemishes, as well as a stable, with-the-grain crack along the lower edge of the wrist on the right side. The steel buttplate has light stippling added to the heel, and has a darkly mottled patina throughout. The rifle comes with its original ramrod, and is mechanically excellent. This exact rifle is illustrated and described on page 122 of “The British Falling Block Breechloading Rifle From 1865 – 2nd Ed." by Jonathan Kirton (1997). This is a great MBL Rifle, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
