Description:
One of a kind, fine quality Pennsylvania/Kentucky Bench/Match-Type rifle by T. Bennett, circa 1840, .60 caliber. Of Traditional Pennsylvania/Kentucky Style with nicely figured full length tiger maple stock of Lancaster styling with raised cheek piece & carved details around the lock & sideplate. The massive pin fastened 47 ½” rifled octagonal barrel is marked with makers mark, “T.BENNETT” in block letters on top barrel flat. Double Set Triggers with Brass furniture including Kentucky style faceted brass triggerguard with rear finger-spur & faceted rectangular forward finial. Plain hickory ramrond is secured with 3 brass ramrod pipes. Brass crescent buttplate with faceted upper finial with toe plate release for patchbox cover. The engraved brass patchbox has sculpted pineapple type forward finial with a matching floral scroll engraved lid. Stock is also adorned with several other inlays including large Silver Starburst above cheek-piece & several octagonal silver medallions and six oval barrel pin escutcheons. The “WARRANTED” marked lock is of Commercial/Trade-type, remaining in overall very good + original flintlock condition with reinforced hammer, a refaced frizzen & teardrop finial frizzen spring. Nicely engraved game bird scene on tail of lockplate. Metal surfaces show a smooth, gun metal gray with some expected patches of discoloration & light pitting from use. Stock is Very Good with 75% + original finish remaining with fine contours & carved details only showing some scattered use & handling marks.
