Description:
This Sharps Rifle is a Civil War Veteran and remains in excellent original condition.  The stock has not been sanded and the cartouches remain very clear and strong. All other markings are clear, and the metal surfaces have no pitting or rust.  The action is fully functional with a strong slightly pitted bore. An original tube, partially full, of “pill” primers is included, contained under the patch box lid.

REVISION:  The "Model 1863" stamped on top of the barrel behind the rear sight is a bit confusing, the barrel is not a replacement.  The barrel is serial number matching to the M-1859 rifle.  The barrel is stamped "55462" under the handguard forward of the mounting screw. See photo #20 added to show matching serial number.

Coats & McAulay published “Civil War Sharps Carbines and Rifles” containing extensive serial number research.  The 42nd PA Inf. Was issued the following Sharps rifles on or about Jan 3, 1863.
                                  Serial Number.    Record
                                        55450                   Co. C
                                        5545X                   No Record

                                        5545X                   No Record
                                        55459                   Co. C
                                        55460                   Co. E
                                        55461                   Co. F
                                        55462                   No Record This Rifle
                                        5546X                   No Record
                                        55466                   Co. F
Although this particular rifle (55462) was not found on the list it is apparent that they were shipped in batch or crate order and it is most likely that it was within this consecutive range shown.  The records were not 100% complete.
These Sharps rifles had been originally intended for the 1st & 2nd U.S. (Berdan) Sharpshooters.  These rifles were placed in storage in the Washington Arsenal to replace arms damaged or lost by Berdan’s Sharpshooters.  An Aug. 1862 protest by the “Bucktails” over an attempt to issue them inferior arms resulted in them receiving enough Sharps rifles from Berdans storage to place between 14-25 in each company.  Of the first 2000 rifles delivered to Berdan Approx. 1500 were issued w/o the double set triggers.
This is a fine example of a rare C.W. rifle with association to both Berdans Sharpshooters and the PA Bucktails.  Cal. .52 x 30in. barrel.  Serial Number 55462.
