Only in production for three short years before a compromise between Colt and Winchester “not to poop in each others nest” saw Colt ceasing their lever action production and develop the 1885 Lightning series instead. Winchester then agreed not to continue development of their six shot revolver. Only a total of 6400 Colt-Burgesses were made. This is a VERY early one, serial number in the 300 range, so undoubtedly it was made in the first month of production, and like Winchester ‘73s and ‘76s, the earlier made ones were not caliber marked. This one has a VG 44CLMR (same as 44WCF) bore, about a 7 on a scale of 10, and has a smooth action. Smooth VG+ metal, and G+ wood in that it has a very well hidden wrist repair and reasonable vey common forearm repair where the loading gate slides under the thin right side of the fore stock. The forearm also shows that it was carried across a saddle a lot, as it is “dished” on the belly quite a bit. Rocky Mountain front sight with an ivory blade insert. Correct Colt low buckhorn rear barrel sight. Very, very tough gun to find, even at the larger gunshows, about VG as described. $4250 SOLD Antique: Yes |
