Description:
Parker Brothers 10-Gauge Quality-2 top-action hammer guns with doll’s-head extensions are not uncommon, as Parker made 3,100 of them. But guns in this condition are.  The quality of the engraving indicates either light use or extreme care by its original owners. For example, on the bottom of the receiver, which is often the first area to wear, one can see the feathers on the pheasant, the grass in which it is standing, and the patent date almost as clearly as when they were first cut.  Moreover, the bores show no signs of pitting, which is rare for a gun of the black-powder period, and the bore and wall thickness dimensions suggest that it has not been honed.  The wood is stunningly beautiful, as properly reconditioned by drawing out damaging petroleum-based oils and replacing them with natural oils through the application of a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish.  The fine Damascus-steel barrels are refinished.  Manufactured in 1884, this gun’s only purpose at that time was to hunt waterfowl and turkey.  It is once again fulfilling that purpose, as well as participating in modern shooting sports on the range.  It should be able to continue to do so for at least another generation or two with proper care.

The 30” barrels have 2-7/8” chambers and are choked skeet (.007) and improved cylinder (.010).  The wall thicknesses (top/side/bottom) for the right barrel 9” from muzzle are 055/.056/.055 and at the middle of the barrel are .069/.069/.066.  The wall thicknesses for the left barrel are .051/.050/.055 and .062/.059/.068, respectively.  Bores 9” from the breech are both .755”.  The outside diameters at the muzzle are .890” and .885”.  This shotgun is on a number 3 frame and weighs 9 pounds 12 ounces.  The drop at the comb is 2” and at the heel 3”.  Length of pull is 13-3/4” to the end of the original checkered dog’s-head horn buttplate.  The trigger pull for the right barrel is 7-1/2 lbs. and for the left 6-1/2 lbs.  The gun locks up tight and on face.  All serial numbers, 43114, match.

The price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  This gun has been fired on multiple occasions on the range using low pressure shells produced by RST Corporation for Damascus barreled shotguns and in the field using RST shells with bismuth shot.  However, as for any antique or vintage shotgun, and especially one over a hundred and thirty years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing and then only use shells that produce pressures for which the gun was designed.  The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which the seller will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost.  Please do not hesitate to call with questions Stephen Wesbrook, 703-625-4830; Doublegun Preservation, LLC - preserving late 19th and early 20th Century double shotguns.
