Description:
This is a very rare, antique minature Indian Tipi constructed of wood poles and muslin cover with hide trim and hide medallions on sides of entrance. This tipi came from the family of F.F. Avery a well known photographer.  He was employed in Indian service before his marriage in 1892. Before moving to Washington State he and his wife were employed by the Indian service in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Crow Creek, North Dakota.

This tipi, according to his family, was collected by Avery around 1890. The construction is in the style of the Nez Perce and a few other Indian tribes in the North West US. Muslin cover has colorful birds painted with blue, yellow and red pigment on both sides and an Indian symbol on the back. Hide rosette medallions on the sides of the entrance. A classic southern plains style Entrance and front seams are trimmed with hide with saw-tooth edges and red paint as is the inside of the top flaps.

This solidly constructed Tipi is in excellent original condition, pigmentation has faded but still shows up quite nicely. This example is smaller than some of the larger ones that measure 36" high and cost in the area of $6,000 to $12,000. This one is a very displayable size measuring 16" High with about a 12" base. Hard to find an original period 19th century tipi like this.
