Description:
Massive French butcher knife with hand made copper sheath.

This is one of the most curious knives I've ever owned. It was found in New Orleans and dates to roughly 1840's. It probably started life as a kitchen knife but the owner had a belt scabbard made for it and was repurposed as a fighting knife.

It size is 19 inches overall. The fully forged blade is 2-1/4" wide and 13-1/2 long including the integrated guard. Two piece stag grips w/ three rivets. One crack near the guard. The copper may have been salvaged from sheet copper from the bottom of a ship. From what I learned, the hard black & green patina on the scabbard is a result of the copper being exposed to moist air.

Bob Vines, seceratary and treasurer of the Antique Bowie Knife Association and a collector of Antique American knives, has seen this knife told me he thinks the knife & scabbard is early fur trade era so I'm safely assuming it's 1830's to 1840's.

Codition is great! Blade has been cleaned once upon a time but shows an aged dull grey patina with a few dark spider type rust pits usually found on old knives. There is separation of the scales from the heavey rust build up between the stag and steel and rust on the tang where it hasn't been disturbed in the clean up. There are some grind marks on the flat of the blade but I can't say what sort of grinder made the marks.
