CIRCA 1850. This Id'd surgical set is the most magnificent that I have ever seen based on it's size (22" x11 1/2" x 5" when closed), and condition.. Dr. Jose Carles was a surgeon in the Spanish Armada from 1833 until his retiremnet in 1866. I have obtained copies of 17 pages of the most pertinant information from his military records that are housed in the Spanish National Archives in Madrid, Spain. These are all hand written in Spanish, of course, and I have had several of the pages translated into English. Due to his 33 years of continuous service, (1833-1866), his total record consists of several hundred pages. The set was made by BLANC of Paris, France and the case, as well a most of the major instruments, are so marked. There is an empty space that once contained two large, multiple pad, tourinquets and there is one pair of scissors and one folding scalpel missing. Aside from that I think everything else is there including the key. The case is quite heavy and built accordingly. All the hinges, latches, and the lock cylinder are in perfect working order.
